Delhi – In the Words of Khuswant Singh

It is dirty, it is clean. It is historic, it is modern. It has cars, it has carts. It is teeming with foreigners, it is teeming with natives. Delhi is a convolution of historical moments, famous personalities, monuments, gardens, goats, beggars, transgenders and pretty much everything else. It is a city where everything is laid bare. From the tragedies of history to the vilest of human trivialities. People eat betel-leaves and spit all around them without regard for the royals that might be in attendance. So many times, Delhi has been ransacked…

The Beast of Baghdad and Return of the Pope

Robert Fisk was the middle correspondent for the Independent newspaper. He covered Iraq extensively during his decades long career. First he would report the Iran-Iraq war of the eighties from the frontline. Then he would be reporting the doomed Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990–91. After that he would be reporting from northern Iraq’s mountains bordering on Turkey, detailing the historical injustices suffered by the Armenians at the hands of Kurds and Turks, and later by the Kurds at the hands of Turks and Iraqi security forces. I think he will…

5 February this year passed like previous 5 Februarys. It is celebrated each year in Pakistan as a day of showing solidarity with the people of Kashmir. The people of Kashmir have been waiting for 73 years for their right of self-determination to be granted. It was given to them by the International Society of States represented by the United Nations. But for one reason or the other this right has proved to be illusory for the people of Kashmir. Meanwhile, they have seen a continuous deterioration of their fundamental rights at the hands of the Indian government. …

Trouble will knock at the door of the plebeian only, whenever it comes knocking. Patrician for the most part will find scores of ways to evade its knocking. The latter have multitude of resources at their disposal to make use of. The former can only spare what’s left of his emaciated existence. It serves, therefore, to the interest of the patrician, that he gives out such information which lays the blame of the trouble on the ill-advised decisions of the plebeian. The decision here is not necessarily of choosing someone to sit on the high table. It could be as…

It is outright heinous what has been happening to Hazaras in Balochistan. They have been subjected to religious persecution time and time again. Despite repeated sit ins and fasts unto death by members of Hazara community to protest their plight, and despite assurances by the political and military establishments of ensuring their safety, the problem has still not been solved. After a brief interregnum killers on the loose again subject the people of Hazara community to gruesome deaths. This time the victims were miners who would already have been struggling hard to earn bread for their dependents. …

Truth must be spoken. We all know that. Elders tell us to be truthful. Scriptures tell us to be truthful. Yet we see that truth has always been so hard to get at. It is difficult to tell who is telling the truth in a court of law. Both sides profess to be telling the truth and yet one is lying. Why has this been created in so convoluted a manner, nobody can tell. Still it is important that truth is spoken. For your own sake and for everybody else’s sake.

A few days ago, truth was spoken by Imran…

The world is a dangerous place. Zombie movies see to it that kids who won’t listen to their mothers learn this lesson as early as possible. Even if its not the kids but grown-ups and non-human entities like states, understand quite well that this world is really a dangerous place. If you do not bully, you will get bullied. If you do not protect yourself from predators, you will get eaten. When law of the land is no longer being accepted by one party, it turns into law of the jungle. And the law of jungle is very aptly described…

It is interesting to see the convergence of forces, which brought about a union of eleven major political parties, on the one hand, whereas, a lonely Imran Khan chilling with his dogs in the winter sun, on the other. Pakistan Democratic Movement or PDM, has been putting out threats of resignations from parliament and public agitation, if its demands are not met. Theirs is only one demand and that is that Imran regime should be sent packing.

While, the pandemic has battered the global economy on one hand, it is interesting to see a movement of the type that PDM…

It is said that if you don’t change fast enough with time, you will be left behind and if you don’t change at all you will soon be crowded out. While studying economics the most fundamental assumption which is made about a market is that there is perfect competition. Perfect competition as defined by economics is hard to find in the real world. Chip away the word perfect and we are only left with competition. Of that there is plenty.

Technology was already changing human lives at unprecedented rates in unprecedented ways. But it was subtle, and we felt at…
